Here at Dorello Carpets, we offer four main types of carpeting: nylon, olefin, polyester, and wool. Plenty of carpets are actually made of a blend of one or more fibers.

Each one has their pros and cons, so be sure to ask our experts which one is right for you.

Nylon
Nylon is more expensive than other synthetic fibers, but all the same it’s been the most commonly used carpet fiber since the 1960s. This is because it’s one of the most versatile of all fibers and can be used to create a variety of carpet styles, including cut and loop pile styles.

Nylon is soft, durable, resilient, and receptive to dye color for versatility and uniformity. Furthermore, most nylon carpets are treated with stain-resisting formulas to protect them against household mishaps.

Olefin
Olefin (also called Polypropylene) carpet fiber is a carpet fiber whose use has exploded since the 1980s.

Unlike many other carpet fibers, olefin does not absorb water, which means it must be pigmented with a solution to give it color. However, this is to your benefit: because solution dying requires the color to be built into the fiber, this means that your carpet’s color is an inherent part of it.  The color won’t fade, even when it’s exposed to intense sunlight, bleach, atmospheric contaminants, or other harsh chemicals. However, olefin is not as resilient as other fibers, so it is often used in loop pile constructions, where there is less need for resiliency.

Polyester
Polyester is one of the softest carpet fibers, and it offers exceptional color clarity. It’s naturally stain and fade resistant, too.

While it’s not as resilient as nylon, carpets made of polyester will still perform well if they’re properly constructed.

These types of carpets are usually available only in cut pile styles, and they’re often less expensive than nylon in comparable weights.

Wool
Wool is the only natural fiber of the four, and it’s been used to make carpets since 3000 BC.

It doesn’t have the stain and abrasion resistance properties of synthetic fibers.

Because of this and the fact that wool carpets are much more expensive, they represent less than 1% of all broadloom carpets sold.
